Realistic Logistics

by vertani

This mod radically changes the game by making logistics more realistic. Stack sizes and the player's inventory are greatly reduced, forcing the player to rely on more sophisticated logistics to progress.

REALISTIC LOGISTICS

Doesn't it seem, well... really weird that you can fit 400 locomotives in your pockets? In a game that's supposed to be about... logistics?

This mod attempts to make logistics much more realistic by dramatically reducing how much you can carry and how large stacks of items are. It makes the logistics part of the game far more challenging, and thus it is recommended (but not required) to use mods to reduce the burden of science. (I never really liked the way science works in Factorio anyway.)

It still isn't entirely realistic, because you can still carry more than a human being reasonably could carry. Nobody should be able to carry even one locomotive, but the game doesn't really work if you can't do that. (In fact, locomotives are so heavy in real life that even launching one in a rocket is basically infeasible; in Factorio they weigh 0.2 tons, but in reality, they weigh 200 tons---literally a thousand times as much, and more than even a Saturn V can carry.) I have allowed some departures from realism in order to keep the game playable. To keep the immersive feel of more realistic logistics, construction robots are very helpful: Let them do the heavy lifting!

WARNING: START A NEW SAVE. Technically you don't have to, you can load an old save, but suddenly decreasing all your storage capacity can cause all sorts of problems if you aren't prepared for it, even potentially crashing the game. Much safer to just start a new save.

Main features

  • Player inventory dramatically reduced.
  • Inventory size of basic chests reduced.
  • Stack sizes reduced for almost everything:
    • Raw materials mostly have stack size 20.
    • Most structures and weapons have stack size 1.
    • Train cars and locomotives have stack size 1.
    • No stack size is too large for a rocket.
  • Train car and locomotive construction costs increased, especially with regard to steel plate.
  • Rocket parts now cost 1 processing unit, 10 low-density ctructure, and 50 rocket fuel, making rockets more about fuel than components.

Compatibility and Recommended Mods

The following mods are known to work well with this mod.

Compatible with Space Age

  • Reduces the stack sizes of just about everything, with rockets in mind.

My own mods

Known Issues

  • Trying to reduce inventory size of logistic chests, but currently not working.
  • If you use a mod that introduces any new items, their stack sizes will be whatever the creator of that mod wanted them to be, likely larger than I would have done. This is pretty much unavoidable with all the mods that are out there. If I list a mod above, I have adjusted its stack sizes according to the standards of this mod. Otherwise, I have not.
