While I love this mod, I feel like it makes regular underground pipes kind of redundant. I think a great way to remedy this is to just shorten the max length of the elevated pipes by a couple tiles (or even a configurable amount). This would make the elevated pipes relevant in smaller, more compact use cases--which was your original goal anyway--while leaving underground pipes as the better option for longer distance transportation.
Please consider, I really enjoy this mod :D
